About Kanashi Toki

Kanashi Toki, a traditional interdisciplinary manga artist, stands out with his unique and daring style that fuses various cultural and artistic influences. Since childhood, he has been captivated by the elegance of European comics and the richness of Japanese manga. However, his work also bears the indelible mark of masters such as Art Spiegelman, the creator of the poignant Maus, who masterfully combines personal history with collective trauma, Leiji Matsumoto, creator of Galaxy Express 999, and Hayao Miyazaki, a legend of Japanese animation. Kanashi Toki’s work explores universal themes such as historical conflicts, the consequences of war, and the omnipresent influence of the past on the present. His fascination with these subjects, coupled with his love for science fiction and dark fantasy, allows him to create poetic worlds, between reality and fantasy. His drive to question the genre and break conventions makes him a captivating Québécois figure in manga for lovers of graphic art and literature, who see in his work a breath of renewal.
