About Hugo Canuto
Hugo Canuto (Salvador, 1986) is an architect, visual artist, and comic book author. His research and creative work explore the relationship between art, culture, and myths from Brazil, Africa, and Latin America. Contos dos Orixás (Independent, 120 pages, 2019) adapts myths and legends of African origins into the language of comics. It was published in the United States by Abrams Books and received the Glyph Comic Awards and the Troféu Ângelo Agostini, as well as finalist nominations for the Jabuti Prize (Comics category), the Ignatz Awards, and the Dwayne McDuffie Award (2023). The King of Fire (Trem Fantasma, 122 pages, 2023) presents a new storyline within the universe of Afro-Brazilian narratives, telling the story of the creation of the world and the kingdom of Oyó from the perspective of Prince Xangô. The Song of Mayrube (Trem Fantasma, 64 pages, 2025) is an epic fantasy inspired by the legends and cultures of Latin America. In an ancestral world shaped by magic and conflict, two rival peoples struggle for control of the land, while a young woman with prophetic gifts embarks on a journey that may transform the course of history.
