But if he’s the good guy\, then who is the bad guy?\nBruce Barnes is a schoolteacher having yet another shit day. His students are a disrespectful nightmare\, gleefully relishing the misery they put him through. But today is even worse than usual\, and after a particularly grim run-in with a student\, he heads to the break room to bum a smoke of another member of the faculty. After lighting up\, he’s told the cigarette is laced with amphetamines. From there\, Bruce rides his « rage snake » from the classroom to the ends of the cosmos and back — fighting\, fucking\, shooting\, racing\, and tripping his way from one impulsive move to the next. Reminiscent of films like Falling Down and shows like Breaking Bad\, What We Mean By Yesterday is a black comedy descent into madness\, a revenge horror/fantasy that gives new meaning to the phrase « bad trip. »\nWhat We Mean By Yesterday began as a daily comic strip\, one page per day\, posted on Marra’s Instagram (@benjamin_marra). Saint-Laurent\, Montréal).\nÀ propos du livre //\nVous arrive-t-il parfois de vous demander comment les historien·nes du futur vont regarder notre époque ? C’est un peu ce que propose cette BD documentaire en se présentant sous la forme d’un faux manuel d’histoire de l’année scolaire 2047-48\, dans un monde situé après l’Effondrement climatique.\n\nForts de cette mise en scène rétrofuturiste\, Emanuelle Dufour et Francis Dupui-Déri nous racontent l’histoire méconnue des différentes révoltes que des millions d’élèves ont menées pour protester contre des injustices\, une histoire bien loin de se limiter à l’exemple non moins épatant de Greta Thunberg et des grèves mondiales pour le climat. S’appuyant sur des témoignages de jeunes et des milliers d’articles de journaux\, les auteur·es nous plongent dans des grèves\, des occupations\, des manifestations et des incendies de pensionnats qui ont tour à tour servis de réponse à la ségrégation raciale aux États-Unis\, à des vagues d’agressions sexuelles en Inde\, aux inégalités sociales au Chili\, à la répression des Autochtones ou de la diversité de genre et sexuelle au Canada et à l’inaction climatique généralisée.\nLe manuel soulève par le fait même des questions importantes sur la notion de démocratie telle que nous la transmettons à l’école et\, plus généralement\, dans la société. Alors que les adultes leur vantent les mérites de la « démocratie » et leur proposent d’élire à l’école des conseils d’élèves sans pouvoir\, des jeunes se mobilisent sur toute la planète pour défendre concrètement leurs intérêts\, leurs valeurs et leur dignité. L’ouvrage nous rappelle ainsi qu’il faut se battre pour protéger nos droits. Voilà de quoi s’inspirer pour faire vivre nos démocraties dans un monde de plus en plus autoritaire…\nComme dans tout bon manuel scolaire\, nous y trouvons des définitions de certaines notions\, des rappels historiques (rubrique « Savais-tu ? ») et quelques exercices sous formes de mots croisés ou de devinettes.\nAvec ce livre\, jeunes et moins jeunes apprendront qu’il n’y a pas d’âge pour se mobiliser au nom de la liberté\, de l’égalité\, de la justice et de la solidarité.\nPour un public de 15 à 95 ans.\nÀ propos de l’autrice et de l’auteur //\nDétentrice d’une maîtrise en anthropologie (UdeM) et d’un doctorat en éducation par les arts (UConcordia) qui croisent sécurisation culturelle et bande dessinée\, Emanuelle Dufour est facilitatrice graphique\, consultante et chercheure postdoctorale. Elle est l’autrice de la BD « C’est le Québec qui est né dans mon pays ! » (Écosociété\, 2021).\nFrancis Dupuis-Déri enseigne la science politique et les études féministes à l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).
