SUMMARY:Boum launches The Jellyfish in conversation with Arizona O'Neill
DESCRIPTION:Join Boum for the launch of The Jellyfish (PowPow Press) at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly at 176 rue Bernard O at 7 pm on Thursday\, May 9th. The evening will feature a conversation with special guest Arizona O’Neill.\nThe event is free and open to all. Books will be available for purchase at the event and the authors will sign copies of their books.\nPlease note that we are encouraging all guests to wear masks at this event. Masks will be available free of charge upon entry.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nOdette is a twenty-something year old with their own place\, a steady job at a local bookstore\, an adorable pet rabbit\, and a budding crush on one of their customers. But Odette is haunted by something only they can see: a jellyfish that’s floating in their eye\, blocking their vision. It’s a seemingly minor annoyance…until the jellyfish starts multiplying.\nShowcasing stunning and inventive artwork by Boum (Boumeries)\, The Jellyfish is a tour-de-force of graphic storytelling\, a powerful\, occasionally terrifying story of facing the thing that we fear the most and finding a light to guide us through the darkness.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nBoum (Samantha Leriche-Gionet) was born in Montréal in 1985. Following her studies in animation and a career that saw her short films shown around the world\, she has dedicated herself to creating comic books since 2011. Some of her many works include the graphic novel A Small Revolution and her long-running\, award-winning series Boumeries. She has a husband\, two daughters\, a cat\, and a very long list of things to do.Boum has suffered from a range of eye conditions for more than fifteen years. In March of 2021 she permanently lost the use of her right eye.\nArizona O’Neill is a Montreal based illustrator and author. She has created original videos for CBC’s Creator Network\, and artists such as Laurence Philomène and Patrick Watson. Arizona is currently working on a graphic memoir.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly would like to acknowledge that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. It has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples. We are grateful that creating and sharing stories has been a part of this land for thousands of years.\n//////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLa Petite Drawn and Quarterly Accessibility information:– We encourage the wearing of masks at our events.– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. Both the step at the entrance\, followed by a half step and a door have StopGap ramps. The door opens inward and is not automated. Once inside\, there are no additional steps.– It is not a sober space\, our events sometimes offer alcohol. Please email events@drawnandquarterly.com if you have any questions!
