Charity & Sylvia: The month is February in the year 1807. The place is Weybridge, Vermont: small, cold, lonely, and beautiful. Sylvia Drake is exhausted. As an unwed woman with few prospects, she is residing with and caring for her sister\u2019s rambunctious family. Today the house is abuzz awaiting a guest\u2014Charity Bryant. A friend of the family, she is most known for her elegant letters, with their swoopy and evocative penmanship and carefully chosen prose. But Charity\u2019s visit is a guise, she is coming to Vermont to start over after heartbreak and rumours\u2014so many rumours\u2014that have grown too loud back in Massachusetts.<\/div>\n
Being openly gay in 19th century New England is not an easy row to hoe. But Charity can only be herself, and she immediately catches\u2014and holds\u2014the eye of none other than Sylvia Drake. From this point on, for 44 years, the two would be inseparable, building a life together despite all odds and living as a lesbian couple in small town Vermont.<\/div>\n

Tillie Walden is a cartoonist and illustrator from Austin, Texas. She is the creator of a number of award-winning graphic novels including On a Sunbeam, Spinning, and the Walking Dead\u2019s Clementine Trilogy. She is a graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont where she now teaches and lives with her wife and son.<\/div>\n

Sina Queyras is a Montreal\/Tiohti\u00e0:ke-based writer, professor, editor, and literary organizer. They are the author of multiple poetry collections, a novel, and a book of essays, as well as the founder of the blog Lemon Hound, which was for many years the digital hub of the Canadian poetry scene. Recent work includes Rooms (Coach House Books, 2022), a blend of memoir, poetry, and criticism offering a peek into the defining spaces of the author as a young queer writer, and My Ariel (2017), a collection riffing on Sylvia Plath\u2019s Ariel, reimagining, queering, and inhabiting its iconic poems. Queyras was also a co-editor of Avant Desire: A Nicole Brossard Reader (2020), which traces the essential queer feminist poet’s innovation, experimentation, and activism across her body of work.<\/div>\n
