The Montreal Comic Arts Festival (MCAF)<\/strong> is proud to announce the programming for its 14th edition, taking place from May 23 to 25, 2025<\/strong>, on Saint-Denis Street, which will be pedestrianized for the occasion between Gilford and Roy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presented in collaboration with the SDC Rue Saint-Denis<\/strong> and T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>, MCAF offers a rich lineup under the theme “Back to the Future<\/strong>” featuring over 60 free activities<\/strong>. This year, more than 320 creators<\/strong> and 170 exhibitors<\/strong> are expected under its tents.<\/p>\n\n\n

Activities for All Audiences<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>\u2019s La Fab \u00e0 dessin<\/em><\/strong> will return, hosting drawn interviews<\/strong> that explore the inspiration and creative processes of artists such as Alex A.<\/strong>, Catherin<\/strong> and Thiago Souto<\/strong>. There will also be conversations about shared themes between creators, such as ornithological fascination with Isabelle Melan\u00e7on<\/strong> and False Knees<\/strong>, food in comics with EB Sciales<\/strong> and Starkie Mak<\/strong> and transitioning from comics to historical graphic novels with Denis Rodier<\/strong> and Djibril Morissette-Phan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Panels<\/strong>, presented by La Presse<\/strong>, will feature dynamic exchanges between comic creators : New Visions of the Apocalypse<\/em><\/strong>, a discussion on open-ended dystopias (Helge Reumann, Sofia Alarcon<\/strong> and Jenna Cha<\/strong>); How to Kill a City<\/em><\/strong>, exploring gentrification in comics (Rick Trembles, Shaghayegh Moazzami <\/strong>and Eleanor Hannon<\/strong>); and Looking Back, Moving Forward<\/em><\/strong>, examining coming-of-age in Comics (Ned Wenlock, Cassandra Calin<\/strong> and D. Boyd<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creative workshops<\/strong> for all ages will also be offered, including sessions where music and comics intersect, courtesy of Jeunesses Musicales Canada<\/strong>, as well as manga and zine-making classes. MCAF will also feature live-drawn performances, such as a character battle<\/em> between Will McPhail <\/strong>and Lu Cafaggi<\/strong>, or guess the drawing <\/em>with Nando von Arb<\/strong> and Art by Tuna<\/strong>. Express drawing lessons also return.<\/p>\n\n\n

New this year: the Creation tent<\/strong> will host free drawing and coloring activities all weekend. Participants can contribute to a time capsule<\/strong>! Artworks sealed inside will be displayed at the 2035 Festival! This will be paired with a game where the public tries to recognize childhood drawings of well-known Quebec comic artists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating their 15th anniversary<\/strong>, \u00c9ditions<\/strong> Pow Pow <\/strong>(Pow Pow Press) has commissioned Cathon<\/strong> and Sophie B\u00e9dard<\/strong> to recount the publisher\u2019s history through humorous comic strips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans of Alex A.<\/strong> will enjoy a Jon Le Bon puzzle trail <\/strong>(in French only) created by Parcours Ludiques<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as always, MCAF will be the perfect opportunity for fans to meet their favorite creators during hundreds of hours of signings, featuring guests like Julian Voloj, Ned Wenlock, Arley Nopra, Marc Torices, Lucie Bryon, Guy Delisle, Camille Van Hoof, Larry Tremblay, Sole Otero, Julie Rocheleau, Sophie Escabasse <\/strong>and Katie Fricas<\/strong>, alongside self-published artists who will have a dedicated space all weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating Swiss Comics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Swiss comics will be celebrated at this year\u2019s Festival, thanks to a partnership with Comics Network Switzerland, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, Presence Switzerland and the Swiss Consulate General in Montreal. Eight Swiss artists will participate: Vamille, Helge Reumann, Krel, Lika N\u00fcssli, MarieMo, Maeva Rubli, Nando von Arb<\/strong>, and Tobias Aeschbacher<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swiss Comics on Display<\/em><\/strong> exhibition will highlight Switzerland\u2019s comic scenes while paying homage to poster art, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage associated with Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Bringing Together the Professional Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, MCAF will dedicate two full days to industry professionals<\/strong>. On Wednesday, May 21, publishers and book professionals will discuss current sector challenges, strengthening ties between Quebec and Switzerland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, May 22, comic artists will attend a masterclass, training session, and panel on artists compensation. The day will conclude with the opening night<\/strong> and B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Awards <\/strong>ceremony at Club Soda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School Programming<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

MCAF will once again host BD POP!<\/em><\/strong>, a free online school day organized with librarians from CSSDM, CSSMB<\/strong>, and CSSPI<\/strong>, as well as \u00c9cole en r\u00e9seau<\/strong>, offering five activities for Quebec schools (in French). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, May 23, student groups are also invited to the Festival site for special activities. MCAF will also host the final round of Laurier School\u2019s Battle of the Books<\/strong> Competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May: Comic Arts Month<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since 2016, MCAF has partnered with Biblioth\u00e8ques de Montr\u00e9al<\/strong> (Montreal\u2019s public libraries network) to celebrate comics across the city all month long. This year\u2019s library theme is travel<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the activities include an exhibition of B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Awards finalists<\/strong> and a comic book selection for on-site reading in Le Grand Salon of l\u2019Esplanade Tranquille<\/strong> (May 1 onward), an exhibition by Marina Le\u00f3n<\/strong> at Caf\u00e9 Bulla<\/strong>, and the world premiere of Larry Tremblay<\/strong> and Pierre Lecrenier<\/strong>\u2019s graphic novel adaptation of L\u2019orangeraie<\/em><\/strong> at Librairie Gallimard<\/strong> (May 21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Must-Attend Event<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From May 23 to 25<\/strong>, MCAF will enliven 1.2 km of Saint-Denis Street<\/strong> with activities for all ages and tastes. Easily accessible via Laurier, Mont-Royal, and Sherbrooke metro stations, the site encourages public transit and cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 100,000 visitors<\/strong> are expected to celebrate comics and the talent of their creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
