Winners of the 25th B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Awards Announced and Opening of the Montreal Comic Arts Festival<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Montr\u00e9al, May 23, 2024 – <\/strong>Several hundred people <\/strong>from the comic arts field were present at La Tulipe for the opening night of the<\/strong> Montreal Comic Arts Festival on Thursday. <\/strong>MCAF\u2019s 13th<\/sup> edition, presented in collaboration with SDC Rue Saint-Denis, officially opens its tents on Saint-Denis Street, between Gilford and Roy, for its great celebration of comic arts from May 24 to 26<\/strong>, where more than 300 creators are expected!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening night, presented by journalist and host Marie-Louise Arsenault<\/strong>, rewarded the best comic books published in 2023 as part of the 25<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Awards<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six prizes were awarded for a total of $5,000 in grants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’aime pas ta robe<\/em><\/strong> by Danielle Chaperon and Samuel Cantin (Monsieur Ed) won the B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Youth Qu\u00e9bec Award, presented by T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec.
Are You Willing to Die for the Cause?<\/em><\/strong> by Chris Oliveros (Drawn & Quarterly) won the B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Qu\u00e9bec Award presented by Librairie Plan\u00e8te BD. This is the first time an English-language work wins this prize, which is awarded to a work published by a Quebec artist, by a Quebec publishing house. 
Catherine de Gongre<\/strong> and Joshua Barkman<\/strong> won the independent Francophone and Anglophone B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Awards respectively, for self-published books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each prize comes with a unique trophy created by artist Karl Dup\u00e9r\u00e9-Richer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comic books are selected and evaluated by volunteer and joint juries composed of librarians, booksellers, authors, book professionals and avid readers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re celebrating another successful year for Quebec comic books. With the quality of the works produced, the juries definitely didn’t have it easy. In fact, the B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Independents Awards received a total of 75 submissions, a record number,\u201d says M\u00e9lanie La Roche, Executive Director of MCAF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe look forward to seeing you tomorrow on Saint-Denis for a multitude of free activities and exhibitions around comic arts. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet your favourite creators or discover new titles to read,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u00e9d\u00e9lys International Award: Des maux \u00e0 dire<\/em>, Bea Lema (Sarbacane)<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

The B\u00e9d\u00e9lys International Award rewards the best French-language comic book published outside Qu\u00e9bec. This year, the prize is offered by Librairie Plan\u00e8te BD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the jury: \u201cDes maux \u00e0 dire<\/em> weaves together the story of V\u00e9ra and her family, and in particular the unhealthy relationship between her and her mother. A pillar of the family, V\u00e9ra is the only one who knows how to deal with her mother. From one crisis to the next, she accompanies her mother through the maze of her own malaise.
The deceptively naive marker drawing, punctuated by magnificent embroidered pages, is a brilliant illustration of a story tinged with pain, but also with hope and love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Youth Award: L’\u00e9chapp\u00e9e belle<\/em>, Faith Erin Hicks (Rue de S\u00e8vres)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

The B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Youth Award rewards the Best French-language comic book intended for young people aged 7 to 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the jury: \u201cIn this book, science fiction blends with reality to give us an engaging story.
The colourful, detailed illustrations catch the eye and capture the reader’s attention.
The emotions and situations experienced by the main character resonate with our own life experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Independent Francophone Award: Cr\u00e9puscule<\/em>, Catherine de Gongre<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

The B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Independent Francophone Award rewards the best self-published francophone comic book created in Quebec. The winner will receive a $1,000 grant from the Montreal Comic Arts Festival, as well as a half-table at the 2025 edition of MCAF. Thanks to\u00a0Druide informatique<\/em>, the winners will also receive a copy of Antidote+ Personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the jury: \u201cCatherine de Gongre carries on her meticulous, delicate work on form in Cr\u00e9puscule, a work in which text becomes image, multiplying its meaning.
The lyrics of a song are incorporated into soberly pencilled illustrations of shadows, close-ups and hatching, taking us among the plants in the garden of a man whose memory is leaving him.
This sensitive assembly gives rise to a moving poetry, summoning up in little touches the memories and mourning of a life in decline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the jury: \u201cA mysterious meteor crashes into the Canadian forest, tearing a gaping hole in the canopy and attracting curious animals from all around. As gregarious chickadees, cynical woodpeckers, a contemplative moose, and more gather together, they find themselves strangely changed. Joshua Barkman\u2019s charming drawings, expert pacing, and dry wit bring this touching tale of connections to life. Recommended for readers of Anders Nilsen\u2019s Big Questions<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Youth Qu\u00e9bec Award rewards the best comic book for an audience aged 14 and under by a Qu\u00e9bec artist published in Qu\u00e9bec.
This year, for the first time, the B\u00e9d\u00e9lys Youth Qu\u00e9bec Award and its $1,000 grant will be presented by T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec. A video featuring the winner will be produced by La Fabrique Culturelle, T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s digital platform dedicated entirely to Qu\u00e9bec culture.
Copibec is pleased to support comic books published in Qu\u00e9bec and will be offering an additional grant of $500. Thanks to\u00a0Druide informatique<\/em>, the winners will also receive a copy of Antidote+ Personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the jury: \u201cThe story is both funny and clever, featuring the excessiveness of children, but bringing it back to reality through the quietude of a cat and the simplicity of a rock. It’s an interesting battle to follow. 
The jury particularly appreciated the humour, the characters’ expressions, the general sense of mischief and the well-crafted illustrations with an eye-catching tone. 
All in all, a great comic book, perfectly suited to the young (and not so young).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the jury: \u201cAre You Willing to Die for the Cause?<\/em> tells the story of the FLQ’s beginnings, focusing on the years leading up to the much-discussed October Crisis of 1970. Taking the form of a supposed CBC documentary, this comic book manages to render, with a certain humour, the more or less conclusive first acts of these fledgling revolutionaries, while also highlighting the tragedies that ensued from their actions. 
This remarkable work by Chris Oliveros, the fruit of in-depth research, is also available in French in an excellent translation by Alexandre Fontaine-Rousseau (Pow Pow).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
