SUMMARY:[EN] Benjamin Marra launches What We Mean by Yesterday Vol. 1
DESCRIPTION:Join Benjamin Marra\, Librairie D+Q\, and Fantagraphics to launch WHAT WE MEAN BY YESTERDAY VOL 1. The cartoonist will appear in conversation with D+Q Executive Editor Tom Devlin. A signing will follow the presentation.\nWHEN: Tuesday August 20th at 7 pm\nWHERE: Espace Drawn & Quarterly\, 176 Bernard O\nWHAT WE MEAN BY YESTERDAY\nThe story of a man driven to the edge — and beyond — by the world around him. But if he’s the good guy\, then who is the bad guy?\nBruce Barnes is a schoolteacher having yet another shit day. His students are a disrespectful nightmare\, gleefully relishing the misery they put him through. But today is even worse than usual\, and after a particularly grim run-in with a student\, he heads to the break room to bum a smoke of another member of the faculty. After lighting up\, he’s told the cigarette is laced with amphetamines. From there\, Bruce rides his “rage snake” from the classroom to the ends of the cosmos and back — fighting\, fucking\, shooting\, racing\, and tripping his way from one impulsive move to the next. Reminiscent of films like Falling Down and shows like Breaking Bad\, What We Mean By Yesterday is a black comedy descent into madness\, a revenge horror/fantasy that gives new meaning to the phrase “bad trip.”\nWhat We Mean By Yesterday began as a daily comic strip\, one page per day\, posted on Marra’s Instagram (@benjamin_marra). Originally begun as an experiment in drawing faster and looser\, it quickly became one of the more popular pandemic era webcomics\, followed by over 20\,000 readers daily.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nBENJAMIN MARRA is the author of several acclaimed graphic novels from Fantagraphics\, including Terror Assaulter (O.M.W.O.T.)\, Night Business\, and American Blood. He received a B.F.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University; studied in Florence\, Italy; and earned his M.F.A. degree in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. He lives in Montreal.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nEspace Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:\n– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. Both the step at the entrance\, followed by a half step and a door have StopGap ramps. The door opens inward and is not automated. Once inside\, there are no additional steps.\n– There is one non-gendered bathroom.\n– It is not a sober space\, our events sometimes offer alcohol.\n♥️ Please email events@drawnandquarterly.com if you have any accessibility needs we can accommodate (for example\, saving you a seat if you have mobility needs) for you to be able to enjoy our events\, worry-free\, and feel free to contact us for any concerns you may have ♥️\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly would like to acknowledge that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. It has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples. We are grateful that creating and sharing stories has been a part of this land for thousands of years.

SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Ghost World
DESCRIPTION:Our September Graphic Novel Book Club pick is GHOST WORLD by Daniel Clowes! Join us to discuss this modern classic at the meeting hosted by D+Q’s Marketing Manager\, Francine Yulo.\nWHEN: Tuesday September 24\, 2024\nWHERE: Espace Drawn & Quarterly\, 176 Rue Bernard O\nFree and no reservation required.\nBuy the book here: https://mtlshop.drawnandquarterly.com/ghostworld\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nGHOST WORLD has become a cultural and generational touchstone\, and continues to enthrall and inspire readers over a decade after its original release as a graphic novel. Originally serialized in the pages of the seminal comic book Eightball throughout the mid-1990s\, this quasi-autobiographical story (the name of one of the protagonists is famously an anagram of the author’s name) follows the adventures of two teenage girls\, Enid and Becky\, two best friends facing the prospect of growing up\, and more importantly\, apart. Daniel Clowes is one of the most respected cartoonists of his generation\, and Ghost World is his magnum opus. Adapted into a major motion picture directed by Terry Zwigoff (director of the acclaimed documentary Crumb)\, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. This graphic novel is a must for any self-respecting comics fan’s library.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nDaniel Clowes is a Harvey\, Eisner\, Ignatz\, and PEN America Literary Award Winner whose comics and graphic novels have been translated into over 20 languages worldwide. He is also an Academy Award nominated screenwriter (for Ghost World)\, and retrospectives of his work have appeared at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago\, the Oakland Museum\, and the Wexner Center in Columbus\, OH. SUMMARY:Barrack Zailaa Rima launches Beirut in conversation with Eli Tareq El Bechelany-Lynch
DESCRIPTION:Join Invisible Publishing and Librairie D+Q to launch BEIRUT with author Barrack Zailaa Rima! The author will appear in conversation with Eli Tareq El Bechelany-Lynch\, author of The Good Arabs and knot body.\nRead more about and buy the book here: https://shorturl.at/J8alR\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nBEIRUT is Barrack Zailaa Rima’s celebrated graphic novel trilogy\, gathered together and available in English for the first time.\nBeirut is an intimate and poetic look at a beloved city that is at once autobiographical\, documentary\, and fantastic in nature. In Rima’s hands\, Beirut is a labyrinth of alleyways and stories\, a theater teeming with revolts\, and a cenotaph to buried memories. With Rima and her family serving as our guides\, and through chance encounters with incongruous figures (a librarian\, a garbage collector—or the city’s last storyteller)\, we discover a city that longs for its Golden Age even as it is transformed by neoliberal forces in the aftermath of the Civil War—an evolution whose future remains uncertain.\nDreamlike\, tender\, and ever-attentive to the beauty of the line\, Beirut offers a glimpse into Lebanon’s past and present\, which must be pieced together to form a whole. From the promise of the political activism of its youth in the 1950s and 1960s\, to the grating difficulties of the 2015 garbage crisis and the struggle to accommodate and assimilate Palestinian refugees\, this is a journey through a city\, and an expedition into the idea of home\, that only Rima could shepherd. No matter the detours.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nA graphic novelist and filmmaker\, BARRACK ZAILAA RIMA was born in 1972 in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, and has lived in Brussels for more than thirty years. While she explored a wide variety of media and art forms in her early career\, Barrack now devotes herself to comics.\nA former member of the Beirut-based Samandal collective\, she is the author of several graphic novels\, editorial cartoons\, and compelling works of comics journalismincluding Le conteur du Caire\, Beyrouth\, and Sociologia . Her latest graphic novel\, Dans le taxi\, published by Alifbata Editions\, received the prestigious Mahmoud Kahil Award for the best graphic novel from the MENA region (Lebanon\, 2022) and the Grenades Literary Prize (Belgium\, 2022).\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nEspace Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:\n– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility.

SUMMARY:EN - Graphic Novel Book Club: Paying For It
DESCRIPTION:Join Librairie D+Q and host Francine Yulo to discuss PAYING FOR IT by Chester Brown for our next Graphic Novel Book Club. The event is free and open to all\, no reservation needed.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nPaying for It was the most talked-about and controversial graphic novel of 2011\, a critical success so innovative and complex that it received two rave reviews in The New York Times. Chester Brown’s eloquent\, spare artwork stands out in this new paperback edition\, tied to the release of the film adaptation co-written and directed by Sook-Yin Lee\, Brown’s longtime friend and the director of Year of the Carnivore and Octavio is Dead!\nPaying for It offers an entirely unvarnished exploration of sex work through Brown’s own life story\, showing him as a timid john who rides his bike to his escorts\, wonders how to tip so as not to offend\, and reads Dan Savage for advice. The book demystifies an experience that is so often sensationalized\, revealing a world of online reviews\, seemingly willing participants\, and clean apartments devoid of clichéd street corners\, drugs\, or pimps. In it\, Brown combines the personal and sexual aspects of his autobiographical work (I Never Liked You\, The Playboy) with the polemical drive of Louis Riel\, as he explores one of the most hotly debated issues in the world and advocates for the importance of legalizing sex work.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nEspace Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:\n– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:FR - Club de lecture FBDM | La BD de science-fiction
