C’est un peu ce que propose cette BD documentaire en se présentant sous la forme d’un faux manuel d’histoire de l’année scolaire 2047-48\, dans un monde situé après l’Effondrement climatique.\n\nForts de cette mise en scène rétrofuturiste\, Emanuelle Dufour et Francis Dupui-Déri nous racontent l’histoire méconnue des différentes révoltes que des millions d’élèves ont menées pour protester contre des injustices\, une histoire bien loin de se limiter à l’exemple non moins épatant de Greta Thunberg et des grèves mondiales pour le climat. S’appuyant sur des témoignages de jeunes et des milliers d’articles de journaux\, les auteur·es nous plongent dans des grèves\, des occupations\, des manifestations et des incendies de pensionnats qui ont tour à tour servis de réponse à la ségrégation raciale aux États-Unis\, à des vagues d’agressions sexuelles en Inde\, aux inégalités sociales au Chili\, à la répression des Autochtones ou de la diversité de genre et sexuelle au Canada et à l’inaction climatique généralisée.\nLe manuel soulève par le fait même des questions importantes sur la notion de démocratie telle que nous la transmettons à l’école et\, plus généralement\, dans la société. Alors que les adultes leur vantent les mérites de la « démocratie » et leur proposent d’élire à l’école des conseils d’élèves sans pouvoir\, des jeunes se mobilisent sur toute la planète pour défendre concrètement leurs intérêts\, leurs valeurs et leur dignité. L’ouvrage nous rappelle ainsi qu’il faut se battre pour protéger nos droits. But if he’s the good guy\, then who is the bad guy?\nBruce Barnes is a schoolteacher having yet another shit day. His students are a disrespectful nightmare\, gleefully relishing the misery they put him through. But today is even worse than usual\, and after a particularly grim run-in with a student\, he heads to the break room to bum a smoke of another member of the faculty. After lighting up\, he’s told the cigarette is laced with amphetamines. From there\, Bruce rides his “rage snake” from the classroom to the ends of the cosmos and back — fighting\, fucking\, shooting\, racing\, and tripping his way from one impulsive move to the next. SUMMARY:Sig Burwash Launches Vera Bushwack in Montreal w/ Lee Lai
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the release of Vera Bushwack\, Sig Burwash is going on tour; catch them in Montreal\, Toronto\, Sydney\, and Ingonish this June!\nOn June 12\, they stop by La Petite Librairie Drawn and Quarterly in Montreal\, and will be in conversation with Lee Lai at 7 pm.\nLa Petite Librairie Drawn and Quarterly is located at 176 Rue Bernard O\, Montreal\, QC H2T 2K2.\n–\nSig Burwash is a visual artist whose practice includes watercolour\, collage\, ceramics\, animation\, illustration\, and comics. Their work is both imaginative and rooted in their lived experience\, including cabin building\, forest stewarding\, motorcycling and crewing on fishing vessels. They have participated in residencies internationally and have been exhibited in Canada\, the United States and Europe. Burwash attended the Centre for Cartoon Studies to work on their debut graphic novel ‘Vera Bushwack’. Originally from kEluwi’sst- Rossland\, British Columbia\, they now live in Unama’ki- Cape Breton Island.\nLee Lai is an Australian cartoonist living in Tio’tia:ke (known as Montreal\, Quebec). She has made comics for The New Yorker\, McSweeneys and The New York Times\, and her graphic novel Stone Fruit was released in 2021 with Fantagraphics\, Sarbacane\, Coconino and other publishers.
