SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Sunday by Olivier Schrauwen
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard Ouest) for our Graphic Novel Book Club! On Tuesday March 3rd at 7 pm we will be discussing SUNDAY by OLIVIER SCHRAUWEN\, published by Fantagraphics. This meeting will be hosted by D+Q’s Executive Editor\, Tom Devlin. The Graphic Novel Book Club is free to attend and no reservation is required.Buy the book: https://mtl.drawnandquarterly.com/sunday/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////SUNDAY follows\, over the course of one day\, the stream of consciousness of a fictionalized version of the author’s cousin\, Thibault. On the day of his girlfriend’s return from an extended trip\, Thibault wakes up\, does nothing\, gets James Brown stuck in his head\, drinks and smokes\, grows paranoid about his relationship\, struggles to compose text messages\, and watches The Da Vinci Code\, all the while avoiding anyone and everyone\, descending deeper into his own thoughts and fears. Meanwhile\, a former crush and another cousin of Thibault’s plan a surprise birthday for him\, sending the external and internal on a collision course.Schrauwen’s brilliant comic timing and formal mastery transcends the quotidian nature of the plot. Through use of color\, flashback and the dissonance between text and image\, the ways in which Schrauwen layers a depiction of human consciousness as lines on paper are infused heavily with slapstick and white-knuckle tension and make for an exhilarating read and breathtaking use of the comics medium./////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////OLIVIER SCHRAUWEN was born in Belgium in 1977 and studied animation at the Academy of Art in Gent\, and comics at ESA Saint-Luc in Brussels. He currently lives in Berlin. He is the author of the books The Man Who Grew His Beard (2011)\, Arsène Schrauwen (2014)\, Parallel Lives (2018)\, and Sunday (2024)./////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:– Our store uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Misery of Love by Yvan Alagbé
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard Ouest) for our Graphic Novel Book Club! On Tuesday September 30th at 7 pm we will be discussing MISERY OF LOVE by YVAN ALAGBÉ\, translated by Donald Nicholson-Smith\, and published by New York Review of Comics. This meeting will be hosted by D+Q’s Sales & Marketing Manager\, Francine Yulo. The Graphic Novel Book Club is free to attend and no reservation is required.\nBuy the book: https://mtlshop.drawnandquarterly.com/misery\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nMISERY OF LOVE: Colonial history haunts this stunning\, spectral-looking graphic novel\, a spiritual sequel to the author’s Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures.\nIn Misery of Love\, a spiritual sequel to the acclaimed Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures\, Yvan Alagbé continues his unflinching interrogation of race and family in modern France.\nThe book focuses on the dream-like memories of a woman named Clare\, who is reluctantly spending time with her relatives for a funeral. Alagbé seamlessly glides between narratives of the family’s past and present\, all haunted by the legacy of France’s colonial subjugation of Africa.\nAlagbé works in stormy grayscale washes\, using comics\, as he puts it\, as “a sacred dimension which celebrates\, questions and perpetuates life…. I believe that life is not damnation but grace.”\nTold through time shifts that echo Richard McGuire’s Here\, Misery of Love is another ambitious\, devastating masterpiece from one of France’s best contemporary graphic novelists.\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nYVAN ALAGBÉ was born in Paris and spent three years of his youth in West Africa. He is a cofounder of the publishing house Amok\, which later merged with the Belgian publishing group Fréon to become Frémok\, now a major European graphic novels publisher. He is the author of Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures. He teaches at Haute école des arts du Rhin in Strasbourg.\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:– Our store uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Cannon by Lee Lai
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard Ouest) for our Graphic Novel Book Club! On Tuesday November 4th at 7 pm we will be discussing CANNON by LEE LAI\, published by Drawn & Quarterly. This meeting will be hosted by D+Q’s VP Editorial\, Tracy Hurren. The Graphic Novel Book Club is free to attend and no reservation is required.\nBuy the book: https://mtlshop.drawnandquarterly.com/cannon\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nCANNON: A LAMBDA Award winner and breakout fiction sensation returns with a darkly funny slice of friendship strife\nWe arrive to wreckage—a restaurant smashed to rubble\, with tables and chairs upended riotously. Under the swampy nighttime cover of a Montreal heat-wave\, this is where we meet our protagonist\, Cannon\, dripping in little beads of regret sweat. She was supposed to be closing the restaurant for the night\, but instead\, well\, she destroyed it. The mess feels a bit like a horror-scape—not unlike the horror films Cannon and her best friend\, Trish\, watch together. Cooking dinner and digging into deep cuts of Australian horror films on their scheduled weekly hangs has become the glue in their rote relationship. In high school\, they were each other’s lifeline—two queer second-generation Chinese nerds trapped in the suburbs. Now\, on the uncool side of their twenties\, the essentialness of one another feels harder to pin down.\nYet\, when our stoic and unbendingly well-behaved Cannon finds herself—very uncharacteristically—surrounded by smashed plates\, it is Trish who shows up to pull her the hell outta there.\nIn Cannon\, Lee Lai’s much anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed and award-winning Stone Fruit\, the full palette of a nervous breakdown is just a slice of what Lai has on offer. As Cannon’s shoulders bend under the weight of an aging Gung-gung and an avoidant mother\, Lai’s sharp sense of humor and sensitive eye produce a story that will hit readers with a smash.\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLEE LAI is an Australian cartoonist living in Tio’tia:ke (colonially known as Montreal\, Canada). In 2021\, she was selected as one of the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 for her debut graphic novel\, Stone Fruit\, which went on to win several awards\, including the Lambda Literary Award for Graphic Novel\, the Cartoonist Studio Prize\, the Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize\, and two Ignatz Awards. Her comics have appeared on the New Yorker\, McSweeney’s\, the New York Times\, Granta Magazine\, and the Museum of Modern Art Magazine.\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:– Our store uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Black Cohosh by Eagle Valiant Brosi
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard Ouest) for our Graphic Novel Book Club! On Tuesday August 26th at 7 pm we will be discussing BLACK COHOSH by EAGLE VALIANT BROSI\, published by Drawn & Quarterly. This meeting will be hosted by D+Q’s Executive Editor\, Tom DevlinBuy the book: https://mtlshop.drawnandquarterly.com/cohosh/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////BLACK COHOSH: A heartfelt\, comedic coming-of-age debut from a bright new talent\nWhen we meet Eagle Valiant Brosi\, he is a long-haired commune kid\, bullied by other kids\, teachers\, and his neighbors. And because of his speech impediment\, Eagle observes silently and often. Mom—a classic earthy\, free spirit prone to discursive lectures on natural medicine and the efficacy of certain plants—is the only one who really cares. So Eagle lets others talk and talk and talk\, revealing their true natures and selfish (sometimes even selfless) motivations.\nIn Black Cohosh\, Eagle pieces together the puzzling and hurtful things he has been told as he takes his first\, tragic steps into adulthood. While things may seem grim\, Brosi’s drawings are loose and limber\, stretching and falling across each page. His cast of hippie archetypes come with iconic thatches of hair\, bushy beards\, and scrawny\, gesticulating arms. Black Cohosh is a captivating debut from a natural storyteller with the expert timing of a veteran comedian and the soothing empathy of a death doula./////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////EAGLE VALIANT BROSI was raised in an unconventional\, back-to-the-land hippie lifestyle in the Appalachian foothills. Despite his non-traditional beginnings\, Eagle conformed to the standard life of an American capitalist. He works from home\, making a computer sigh and groan. In this routine\, days pass by without much human interaction. His garden\, however\, provides a contrast to the quiet work life. Among rows of tomatoes\, beans\, zucchini\, summer squash\, he enjoys the good company of slugs\, mosquitoes\, and bumblebees. If he closes his eyes hard enough\, he forgets about the life he was supposed to lead and who he was supposed to be./////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:– Our store uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Milk White Steed by Michael D. Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard Ouest) for our Graphic Novel Book Club! On Tuesday April 29th at 7 pm we will be discussing MILK WHITE STEED by MICHAEL D. KENNEDY\, published by Drawn & Quarterly.\nBuy the book: https://mtlshop.drawnandquarterly.com/milkwhite\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nMILK WHITE STEED: A series of individuals leave the West Indies and attempt to find their footing in the damp dinge of England’s counties. A child on his daily trike ride is stalked by a sinister\, shape-shifting ligahoo. A blues singer’s wife hallucinates untoward revelations in the grips of high yellow fever when she inhales spores from psychedelic mushrooms growing unchecked in their apartment. A man dwells on his absent father\, paints the man into a duppy myth\, and bears the consequences of this fantastical undertaking.\nInspired by the folk tales and oral traditions of his Caribbean roots\, Milk White Steed is a dreamlike venture into the messy truths of everyday West Indian lives: the abiding pursuit of the familiar and the vicious appraisal of their own otherness\, all at once. Phantom desires\, unchecked reveries\, and surreal visions of the future flood the page in full-color. Kennedy’s decisive woodcut-inspired brush-strokes draw a striking portrait of the Black diaspora as it sees itself\, always searching and yet forever seeing.\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nMichael D. Kennedy is a cartoonist and illustrator from the English midlands. Influenced by old British children?s comics and annuals\, his stories seek to present the lives of overlooked folk and and the lower classes. Notably\, he is the author of the small press series Mint\, a collection titled Mr Hardee and most recently Biffa. He has had comics work published by McSweeney?s Quarterly and The Believer. Working as an illustrator since 2020\, Michael has been published by the likes of The New Yorker\, New York Times and The Atlantic. He has lived in Tamworth\, Aston\, Olton and currently lives in Balsall Heath with his wife Carli. When the weather agrees with it\, he can be found at their allotment in Highbury Park.\n/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:– Our store uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. Both the step at the entrance\, followed by a half step and a door have StopGap ramps. The door opens inward and is not automated. Once inside\, there are no additional steps.– There is one non-gendered bathroom.– It is not a sober space\, our events sometimes offer alcohol.– Please email events@drawnandquarterly.com if you have any accessibility needs we can accommodate.

SUMMARY:EN - Graphic Novel Book Club: Paying For It
DESCRIPTION:Join Librairie D+Q and host Francine Yulo to discuss PAYING FOR IT by Chester Brown for our next Graphic Novel Book Club. The event is free and open to all\, no reservation needed.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nPaying for It was the most talked-about and controversial graphic novel of 2011\, a critical success so innovative and complex that it received two rave reviews in The New York Times. Chester Brown’s eloquent\, spare artwork stands out in this new paperback edition\, tied to the release of the film adaptation co-written and directed by Sook-Yin Lee\, Brown’s longtime friend and the director of Year of the Carnivore and Octavio is Dead!\nPaying for It offers an entirely unvarnished exploration of sex work through Brown’s own life story\, showing him as a timid john who rides his bike to his escorts\, wonders how to tip so as not to offend\, and reads Dan Savage for advice. The book demystifies an experience that is so often sensationalized\, revealing a world of online reviews\, seemingly willing participants\, and clean apartments devoid of clichéd street corners\, drugs\, or pimps. In it\, Brown combines the personal and sexual aspects of his autobiographical work (I Never Liked You\, The Playboy) with the polemical drive of Louis Riel\, as he explores one of the most hotly debated issues in the world and advocates for the importance of legalizing sex work.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nEspace Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:\n– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: Ghost World
DESCRIPTION:Our September Graphic Novel Book Club pick is GHOST WORLD by Daniel Clowes! Join us to discuss this modern classic at the meeting hosted by D+Q’s Marketing Manager\, Francine Yulo.\nWHEN: Tuesday September 24\, 2024\nWHERE: Espace Drawn & Quarterly\, 176 Rue Bernard O\nFree and no reservation required.\nBuy the book here: https://mtlshop.drawnandquarterly.com/ghostworld\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nGHOST WORLD has become a cultural and generational touchstone\, and continues to enthrall and inspire readers over a decade after its original release as a graphic novel. Originally serialized in the pages of the seminal comic book Eightball throughout the mid-1990s\, this quasi-autobiographical story (the name of one of the protagonists is famously an anagram of the author’s name) follows the adventures of two teenage girls\, Enid and Becky\, two best friends facing the prospect of growing up\, and more importantly\, apart. Daniel Clowes is one of the most respected cartoonists of his generation\, and Ghost World is his magnum opus. Adapted into a major motion picture directed by Terry Zwigoff (director of the acclaimed documentary Crumb)\, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. This graphic novel is a must for any self-respecting comics fan’s library.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nDaniel Clowes is a Harvey\, Eisner\, Ignatz\, and PEN America Literary Award Winner whose comics and graphic novels have been translated into over 20 languages worldwide. He is also an Academy Award nominated screenwriter (for Ghost World)\, and retrospectives of his work have appeared at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago\, the Oakland Museum\, and the Wexner Center in Columbus\, OH. He lives in Oakland\, California\, with his wife and son.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly would like to acknowledge that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. It has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples. We are grateful that creating and sharing stories has been a part of this land for thousands of years.\n////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nEspace Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:\n– Our event space uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Book Club: The Wendy Award
DESCRIPTION:Join our Graphic Novel Book Club as we meet on Tuesday July 30th at 7 pm at Espace Drawn & Quarterly (176 rue Bernard O) to discuss THE WENDY AWARD by Walter Scott! The book club will be hosted by Francine Yulo and is free and open to all. No registration is required.\nBuy the book here: https://shorturl.at/8L3dZ\nWe Ship Canada-wide!\nBy purchasing your book at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly you help support events like this one\, independent publishing and retailing\, our neighborhood\, and authors both local and from around the world who depend on independent bookstores for their livelihood. Your support is appreciated.\n///////////////////////////////////////////\nTHE WENDY AWARD\nEverybody’s favorite party girl Wendy is so back\nWhen Wendy is nominated for the coveted National FoodHut Contemporary Art Prize alongside her friend Winona\, all of her millennial dreams seem to be coming true. She lives a post-pandemic\, polyamorous fine artist’s lifestyle in the big city and basks in the glory of national attention with the success of her popular comic strip\, “Wanda.”\nBut not even achieving bona fide art star fame can hide the truth: a never-ending struggle with imposter syndrome. After she cracks in an online interview and gets dragged in the comments section\, she heads straight to a local watering hole to drown her sorrows. Several lines of coke\, too many drinks\, and one all night rager with fans later\, Wendy is ready to curse Gen Z and confront her addictions. All the while\, she and Winona drift apart as a younger Indigenous artist wedges herself between them. Will Wendy’s commitment to change wind up short-lived?\nThe Wendy Award incisively skewers the art world with its corporate overlords\, performative activism\, generational wealth\, and weaponized therapy speak. A showcase of Walter Scott’s deft wit and social commentary\, The Wendy Award asks the hard questions\, like Do they still give awards to men? Should we be grateful for the exposure? And what exactly is Big Auntie Energy?\n///////////////////////////////////////////\nWALTER SCOTT is an interdisciplinary artist working in comics\, drawing\, video\, performance\, and sculpture. His graphic novel series Wendy chronicles the continuing misadventures of a young artist in a satirical imagining of the contemporary art world. Scott’s eponymous party girl has previously been featured in three graphic novels Wendy; Wendy’s Revenge and Wendy: Master of Art as well as in Canadian Art; Art in America; The New Yorker; The New York Times and MoMA Magazine. Scott has been nominated or longlisted for the Ignatz Awards\, Canada Reads\, the Believer Book Award\, and the Doug Wright Award\, and finally\, the Sobey Art Award—considered to be the preeminent fine art award in Canada.\n///////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly recognizes that our bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. This has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples. It is important to think about how each and every one of us has arrived here. SUMMARY:D+Q Young Otaku Manga Club: Medieval Magic
DESCRIPTION:The Summer edition of the Drawn and Quarterly Junior Manga Bookclub invites young people between 9 and 12 years old to read the suggested mangas and meet up to discuss the books. Whether you’ve read the first book in the series or all of them\, you’re welcome to join us to discuss the world of these characters and share or learn more facts about every series. The club is hosted by Felix Mendritzki who is a 10 year old manga fan. He chose the books that he felt would spark the best conversations as well as introduce new books to seasoned manga lovers and newbies alike. It’s a very relaxed setting that will be led by the kids and what they want to discuss. It’s a great reason to pick up a book during the summer! This is a bilingual bookclub\, with discussion happening in French or English\, and kids are welcome to read either language version of the book. \nMedieval Magic These lesser known mangas are all about magic in a fantasy world filled with sorcerers and elvens.
