SUMMARY:Exposition Heavily Greebled / Walter Scott
\n— \nThe exhibition reveals a marked evolution in the practice of Walter Scott\, an internationally recognized artist known for his comics that observe the contemporary art world with humour and insight. He introduces a new character\, Organza\, extending his narrative universe beyond the iconic Wendy. \nAt the heart of the exhibition\, an unclassifiable and resolutely hybrid filmic work navigates between speculative fiction\, autofiction\, and offbeat humour. Driven by a singular visual language—mixing live-action footage\, puppets\, and hand-drawn animation—Organza’s Revenge marks Scott’s bold transition from the medium of comics to that of film\, while preserving the handmade\, sensitive\, and incisive aesthetic that defines his work. \nAt Fonderie Darling\, sculptures\, paintings\, and installation devices extend Organza’s universe beyond the screen and transform the Main Hall into an immersive environment. Visitors are invited to move through this new facet of Scott’s practice\, guided by a narrative that explores the somatic impact of our wounds\, as well as the notions of acceptance\, forgiveness\, and revenge. \nMilly A. SUMMARY:Tillie Walden launches Charity & Sylvia
DESCRIPTION:Join celebrated cartoonist Tillie Walden as she launches her epic historical romance\, Charity & Sylvia\, at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (176 Rue Bernard O) on Wednesday August 5th at 7 pm. Tillie will appear in conversation with Montreal poet Sina Queyras.\nSee the book here: https://mtl.drawnandquarterly.com/charitysylvia\nThis event is free to attend and no RSVP is required!\n//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nCharity & Sylvia: The month is February in the year 1807. The place is Weybridge\, Vermont: small\, cold\, lonely\, and beautiful. Sylvia Drake is exhausted. As an unwed woman with few prospects\, she is residing with and caring for her sister’s rambunctious family. Today the house is abuzz awaiting a guest—Charity Bryant. A friend of the family\, she is most known for her elegant letters\, with their swoopy and evocative penmanship and carefully chosen prose. But Charity’s visit is a guise\, she is coming to Vermont to start over after heartbreak and rumours—so many rumours—that have grown too loud back in Massachusetts.\nBeing openly gay in 19th century New England is not an easy row to hoe. But Charity can only be herself\, and she immediately catches—and holds—the eye of none other than Sylvia Drake. From this point on\, for 44 years\, the two would be inseparable\, building a life together despite all odds and living as a lesbian couple in small town Vermont.\nThe true\, exceptional story of these remarkable women is brought to life with humor and passion by the unparalleled and award-winning Tillie Walden (Spinning\, On A Sunbeam). We see America grow alongside these women over a period that brings about the railroad\, many novels\, 14 Presidents\, riots\, rebellion\, plagues\, and poetry. Based on extensive archives of their writing\, Charity and Sylvia is a groundbreaking biography that is also the story of 19th century America.\n//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nTillie Walden is a cartoonist and illustrator from Austin\, Texas. She is the creator of a number of award-winning graphic novels including On a Sunbeam\, Spinning\, and the Walking Dead’s Clementine Trilogy. She is a graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont where she now teaches and lives with her wife and son.\n//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nSina Queyras is a Montreal/Tiohtià:ke-based writer\, professor\, editor\, and literary organizer. They are the author of multiple poetry collections\, a novel\, and a book of essays\, as well as the founder of the blog Lemon Hound\, which was for many years the digital hub of the Canadian poetry scene. Recent work includes Rooms (Coach House Books\, 2022)\, a blend of memoir\, poetry\, and criticism offering a peek into the defining spaces of the author as a young queer writer\, and My Ariel (2017)\, a collection riffing on Sylvia Plath’s Ariel\, reimagining\, queering\, and inhabiting its iconic poems. Queyras was also a co-editor of Avant Desire: A Nicole Brossard Reader (2020)\, which traces the essential queer feminist poet’s innovation\, experimentation\, and activism across her body of work.\n//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\nLibrairie Drawn & Quarterly Accessibility information:– Our store uses StopGap.ca ramps in an effort to encourage accessibility.
